Reading the charts for beginners 1

Before we start to knit the specific motif it is useful to try to imagine the motif, looking at the chart. It is not easy at the beginning but one day it becomes automatic. And then it will help to knit faster and very intuitively.

Sample pattern:

Let's say that we will try to knit the swatch. This will be useful not only to further calculating the project but also to illustrate how the motif looks and if we have chosen the proper yarn/needles. If so we need to decide how many stitches we should cast on for our swatch. Looking at the top-left corner we see that the patterns has 23 stitches. NO! We have to take under attention that at the beginning of the pattern we find two grey symbols of No Stitch, so our motif has NOT 23 stitches but 21.

Apart we want to see full beauty of the motif so we will add two purl stitches and one edge stitch each side. Adding them together we have 27 stitches to cast on.

IMPORTANT: the row of "cast on" we treat as a ROW1 of the entire project (not the motif).
If - in example - we will finally knit the sweater we sometimes begin with the rib. Let's do the same here and first knit 5 rows of 1 x 1 rib, starting at WS from the knit stitch (at RS will be purl) after the edge stitch. Then we will have 6 initial rows of our swatch and we are on RS.

Now let's take two stitch markers...

... and mark the first stitch and the last stitch of our motif (still RS)

We remember that each side we have additionally one edge stitch and two purls. The motif starts and ends in the marked stitch.
